Liquid-phase vessels hold granular activated carbon (GAC); as water passes through, dissolved contaminants adsorb onto the carbon. GAC works because of its surface area — one gram carries roughly 1,000 square meters of it — and a treatment train usually runs two vessels in series, in up- or down-flow depending on the application.
